Today my post is on what to do during an ice storm.
First of all, try not to go outside, especially if you live near power lines-a half inch buildup of ice can cause a telephone wire to weigh up to five hundred pounds extra! Ice can also increase the weight of branches by thirty times.
Avoid driving if possible. Freezing rain makes the roads extremely slippery and has been the cause of several car accidents. With ice storms there usually comes wind, too. This can increase the chances of hypothermia, so dress appropriately in warm clothing like coats, gloves snow pants, and other winter gear.
If you live on a farm, be sure to move any livestock to shelter as soon as possible. Wear rubber-soled boots if you have any because they provide the best traction. It is a great idea to have a survival kit for your family,in you home and car, in case you get stranded.
I have been in an ice storm last year. They can be fun for kids because you can slide around on the ice, but remember that you can still get really hurt if you do this. I almost sprained my wrist because I fell pretty hard. Be cautious, but also think on the positive side- you don't need to pay to go ice skating! :)
I hope you liked my post! Stay safe!
