In many action shows, volcanic eruptions may look cool and it adds nicely to the lighting of the scene. But they are very deadly. So are you at risk? If so, how do you prepare for one?
It's a given that you will start with obtaining the basics: food, bottled water, flashlights with extra batteries, first-aid kit, manual can opener, sturdy shoes, battery powered radio and essential medications.
You will also want, protective eye wear (goggles) and breathing protection.

If you are told to evacuate:
- Fill all tubs and sinks with extra water for washing. (You should already have bottled water for drinking)
- Check and add to your car's emergency kit. (Sleeping bags, first aid, food, water...)
- Fill your vehicle with gas.
- Adjust your refrigerator temperature to the coldest temperature possible. (If your power goes out, your food will stay cold longer)
- Prepare to take household pets with you. (Be aware, most shelters won't accept pets.)
- Place any livestock in pens.
- Turn on the radio for updates and listen for warning signs.
- Take only the necessities.
- If you have time, turn off electricity and gas.
If you're told to stay put:
- Listen to the radio and know what's going on.
- Lock and close all windows and outside doors.
- Close your fireplace damper.
- Know where all your emergency supplies are.
- Take care of your pets. Have extra food and water for them and bring them with you.
- Go into an interior room without windows that is above ground level.
- Call your out of area emergency contact.
