If you see these signs, there may be a tsunami coming!
- A large earthquake that lasts for more then 20 sec. An earthquake may cause a sudden upward thrust of the water.
- A very sudden, rapid receding of water. This may be the only sign for some coastline areas that don't feel the shaking of the earthquake.
Know:
- A tsunami may occur with very little warning but if you do suspect a tsunami may be coming, warn the others around you and head for high ground.
- Tsunami's come in more then one wave. There could be several waves after the initial wave. Stay on high ground until you are absolutely sure the tsunami's waves are all over. A lot of people die in the second or third wave because they think the tsunami is over before it really is.
- The waves can be separated by a few seconds, several minutes or possibly longer.
