Hi guys! Today I am going to talk about ice-safety. At this time of year, a lot of people like to go ice skating on ponds. In fact, I just went skating last week! It was super fun, but we didn't know whether or not it was safe. After I got home, I decided to do a little research. This is what I found: - First of all, measure the thickness of the ice. You can do this with a drill and a measuring tape. Make sure you test it every 150 feet, because the thickness of the ice can vary. Here is a general guide to how thick the ice should be: 6" for cloudy ice, this ice is not as strong. 4" for clear ice. Even though it seems weird, it's stronger than the cloudy ice .Make sure the ice is 12" - 15" If you want to drive a car or small truck on it. If you do fall in, try to act calm. DO NOT remove any winter clothing. It will not weigh you down, but keep you afloat and keep you warm. Roll away from the thin ice. Call, or have someone else call a rescue center. They will know what to do to get you out. Thanks for reading! I hope you have a great, safe season. Don't forget to comment! -Caddie |
