Due to the number of people affected by flooding this past month, I've decided to jump right in.
It's true that there are flash floods and other reasons that would keep you from being warned about a flood, so it's important (I always say this, I know) to prepare ahead of time!
Before the flood:
- Flood Insurance: If there's even a slight chance that you're house could be flooded, get flood insurance
- Document copies: make copies of all your critical information/make a list and take photographs of all valuable possessions you keep in your house and store them in a water proof container.
- Appraisal: Have jewelry and artwork appraised.
- Sump Pump: make sure it's working and have a battery powered back up incase of a power failure.
- Elevate your electronics: raise them to at least 12 inches above your home's projected flood elevation
- Do the same thing with your furnace, water heater, washer and dryer. Place them on cement blocks.
- Keep valuables in a safe place
- Keep a list of emergency contact numbers by the phone
- Flood evacuation route: plan one and make sure each family members knows what to do (home as well as school and work)
- Have an (out of state) emergency contact number: make sure everyone knows who it is/has their number memorized
- Safety Kits: of course! Have one that contains sanitary food, drinking water, flashlights, batteries, a radio and emergency safety blankets.
Next post will be on what to do once(if) you know that you will be flooded.
