Avalanche
- Avalanche conditions are predictable.
- 90% of people die in avalanches that are caused by themselves or someone in their group.
- A buried victim has only a 27% chance of survival if buried after 35 minuets.
Safety:
If there's
Cracking or collapsing snow
whumpfing sounds
or hollow sounds on hard snow...be warned!
Make sure to check the area for recent avalanches in that area. If so, more avalanches are possible.
Skiers and Snowboarders:
Choose the safest rout on the ascent.
Only expose one person at a time in case an avalanche happens.
Snowmobilers:
You cover more ground in a day then skiers and snowboarders, if there's an avalanche, you're more likely to find it. Only high mark one at a time and walk up to help a person if he/she is stuck.
Snowshoers:
Be just as careful as the other sports.
