Hey guys! This month our topic is Ice Storms. Ice can be very beautiful and delicate, however in an Ice Storm it can be very destructive. An ice storm happens when a warm air mass collides with a cold air mass. Many ice storms happen every year. They include cold temperatures, precipitation, and strong winds. The process of an ice storm is when some water vapor from the warm air condenses into clouds. Snowflakes fall from the clouds into the warm air and melts into raindrops. Th rain drops fall through a cold air layer near the ground and doesn't freeze thoroughly until it hits something colder that it. This can get up to 8 inches thick! The freezing rain from an ice storm covers everything with heavy, smooth glaze ice. In addition to hazardous driving or walking conditions, branches or even whole trees may break from the weight of ice. Falling branches can block roads, tear down power and telephone lines, and cause other damage. Even without falling trees and tree branches, the weight of the ice itself can easily snap power lines and also break and bring down power/utility poles; even electricity pylons with steel frames. This can leave people without power for anywhere from several days to a month. I hope you all have a safe and happy January! Don't forget to leave a comment asking us for next months topic :) Question: Have you or a loved one ever been in an Ice Storm?? If so please let us know in the comments, we love to hear from you!

I enjoyed your blog. I have been in a few ice storms, and afterwards they are fun for kids. No school, Some roads are too steep for the sand truck. Anywhere there is a slant a sled can go and go fast. Snow too deep to walk in, is now walked on top, and you do not break through. You could skate on gravel, or on top of the snow, but not very well. I used to keep 100 pounds of sand in my trunk, a broom, to sweep snow, and a scraper with a long handle to chip away ice. I kept insulated overalls, and boots in my car. I once spent 40 hours driving in a car with no heater. I was so cold. It was 40 below outside.

Wow Tom. That's pretty cool. I can't imagine how spending 40 hours in a car with no heater when it was 40 below outside was like!
