Here is what you'll want if you are ever caught in an ice storm:
- Extra blankets and warm clothing. Make sure to be covered in your car as well.
- It's always good to have a battery powered radio and flashlight with extra batteries.
- You'll want some non-perishable food that pack a lot of calories. It's good to have extra bottled drinking water too.
- Something to give you help for the slippery ice on your driveway and other icy walkways. Cat litter, salt, and sand (if it's sunny) are some options. (Salt is used to melt ice while sand is used for better grip on the ice.)
- A windshield scraper, tool kit and booster cables are good things to keep in your car.
- A manual can opener.
- A first aid kit (with a one week supply of all special medical needs).
- Fire distinguisher, smoke detecter, and carbon monoxide detector are some good extra safety cautions.
- A storage of non-perishable food you can prepare without power.
- Make sure to keep your cell phone charged just in case the power goes out.
