Let's say a disaster actually happened. What is the first thing you would do? Asses others in your building hopefully. But what would you be wondering, or maybe more accurately, your mom be wondering?
Are you still alive?
Let's assume we all have family members, or at least people close to us that care about us.
It may be that most of your family lives in Oklahoma where the Tornado occurred. Can you imagine the hassle it would be to try and call everyone to see where they are and if they're okay?
We don't even have to mention the amount of calls coming in and going out from other people.
But let's say you happen to have an emergency contact. Your Aunt Linda who lives across the country.
That would be convenient.
So your whole family has her number memorized. Everyone calls her first. When you call in, you find that your sister and mother have both already called and are doing fine, and now you know their location.
You give your Aunt Linda the "I'm okay" message and your own location so when your brother calls, he'll know that all three of you are okay and he'll know where to find you.
Not only that, but your Uncle Bob, who also lives out of town, calls her to see how everyone has fared. See the importance?
Get an emergency contact number now, if you don't already have one. Make sure the rest of your family knows about it and has the contact's number.
Emergency Contact:
*Preferably someone across the country, or far enough away so they won't be caught in the same disaster. (Plus, sometimes after a disaster, long distance calls will work when other calls won't)
*Give your contact (along with your local contact) to schools. If local calls aren't working, it will be nice for you or your child's school to be able to get ahold of someone.
*Make sure to memorize the number, and have your relatives do it as well.
Go do it now!!
You never know when disaster will strike. Don't hesitate. Don't regret.
Until next time!
